Surveying and Mapping

F&L has a complete understanding of the Subdivision Map Act and how it fits into the design process. We have prepared numerous tentative and final maps for residential (both condominiums and single-family detached), mix-use, and commercial developments. In the field, we are equally adept at collecting field data in the preparation of ALTA/ACSM, boundary, and topographic surveys.

WBSD Flow Equalization (Menlo Park, CA)

As part of the wastewater collection system, the West Bay Sanitary District (WBSD) owns and maintains a Flow Equalization and Resource Recovery Facility (FERRF) used for the storage and retransmission of wastewater. Located adjacent to the SF Bay, perimeter maintenance access roads around this facility are in need of upgrade to protect the facility from King Tides that are extremely close to breaching onto the site. F&L serves the WBSD in designing and permitting, coordinating efforts with various stakeholders. Improvements to the maintenance roads require sheetpiles and raising the grades above the 100-year FEMA Floodplain as well as accounting for sea level rise to keep the facility operating even during the 100 year storm event. This helps to safeguard against SSOs onsite. The project also includes a living shoreline to stabilize the northeastern edge, restore the shoreline, increase resiliency to rising sea levels and create habitat.

UCSF Minnesota Street Student Housing (San Francisco, CA)

The Minnesota Street Student Housing project includes affordable housing for UCSF medical students and trainees using an optimal design and implementation approach to reduce cost, improve quality, and improve constructability. The project delivered 595 units of housing and accommodates 710 residents, with construction completed in January 2020. The site is comprised of two parcels located at 590 and 600 Minnesota Street, approximately one block south of the Mission Bay campus in the Dogpatch neighborhood. F&L’s services include:

Comprehensive civil engineering design services including base map preparation, site demolition, grading design, and site utility service connections.
Coordination with public agencies for permitting.
Provided stormwater design alternatives

Development of the LEED rating system for construction documents

Silicon Valley Clean Water Wastewater Treatment Facility (Redwood City, CA)

F&L is the lead site civil engineer for the proposed Front of Plant Improvements. We are working closely with Silicon Valley Clean Water (SVCW) and the larger Front of Plant planning and design team for the project that is anticipated to include new influent pump station, new headworks and screening facility, and flow equalization facilities. F&L’s services include:

UCB: Berkeley Way Project (Berkeley, CA)

UCB (University of California, Berkeley) is replacing Tolman Hall with a new academic office building located at 2012 Berkeley Way in Berkeley, California. The building includes UCB faculty offices for the departments of Public Health, Education, and Psychology including both classroom space as well as third party tenants. F&L’s services include:

Kaiser Permanente Hub and Cancer Center Tentative Map (Dublin, CA)

F&L is providing surveying and mapping services to prepare a vesting tentative map consistent with the requirements from the City of Dublin. The site is being developed by Kaiser Permanente to expand services available in the Tri-Valley area. F&L’s services include:

Mission Bay: Blocks 26-28 Public Infrastructure Improvements Project (San Francisco, CA)

F&L provided surveying and mapping services for the redevelopment of Mission Bay Blocks 26-28, including:

Hoover Elementary School Safe Pedestrian Routing (Burlingame, CA)

As part of the rebuilding of Hoover Elementary School, the City of Burlingame determined the need to improve pedestrian safety. The City desired to evaluate and upgrading existing pedestrian crossings adjacent to Hoover Elementary School to address congestion during peak hours. F&L’s services include:

Dominican Sisters of Mercy St. Josephs Priory Replacement (Fremont, CA)

F&L provided civil engineering, surveying, and mapping services for the proposed new 38-unit priory residence, Wellness/Activity building, and associated new access road and parking areas. A new perimeter access road was constructed around the north, east and south sides of the new buildings as well as a 26-space parking area. The proposed project also incorporated stormwater features to comply with the C3 provisions of the Municipal Regional Permit. F&L’s services included:

UCSF: Block 25a Mission Hall (San Francisco, CA)

UCSF tasked the architectural team, including F&L, to develop the Project Design Criteria Bridging Document to be used by the Design/Build Contractor to complete the design and construction of the new Mission Hall. F&L prepared technical specifications incorporated into the Bridging Documents including establishing tiered performance criteria to establish the minimum requirement the project and multiple levels of potential enhanced performance that were selected and implemented by the Design/Build Contractor. Our services included:
